THINGS TO SEE & DO

Santorini
Santorini is a volcanic island, and world-famous for its dramatic landscapes and views from the dazzling white towns over the deep blue Aegean Sea. It’s the only inhabited “Caldera” (volcano cauldron) in the world. Santorini used to be a round island, but during an earthquake and volcano-outbreak in the 15th century BC the middle of the island sunk and gave it the shape it has today  There are several villages around the island, the most famous being Oia, known for its charm and the place for incredible sunsets; Fira: built on the western edge of the caldera, it’s the stunning main cliff-perched town, featuring all that Oia has, but much more overcrowded and Pyrgos: the highest point on the island with its  picturesque monastery and streets. Getting around is easy – with a choice of bus routes between towns, rental cars and several foot paths to be forged. There are several beaches around the island, reached by land and some only accessible by boat from the water.

Megalochori
Megalochori is one of the most picturesque villages on the island. Its existence is recorded back to the 17th century.  Home to historical mansions, old traditional houses, pirate hideaways and wine caves, it has a history of merchants and wealthy land barons exporting Vinsanto wine that the island still produces. A prominent feature of the historical homes and mansions are the high walls, inner courtyards and solid wooden door entrances, built for privacy and for safety against marauding pirates. A great effort is been made by local residents and businessmen to preserve the characteristics and beauty of this traditional settlement, and many of the original houses that had fallen into disrepair, have been restored to their former glory. It’s only a short walk to the village from the Artemis Suites hotel.

Proftis Elias Monastery
The Monastery of the Prophet Elias stands at the highest point on Santorini above Pyrgos village, and offers a spectacular view of the surrounding islands. Founded at the beginning of the 18th century, this served as a secret school where Greek culture and language were secretly taught during the Turkish occupation. A monk’s cell holds a museum which contains a model of the secret school along with other models of traditional carpentry and blacksmith shops, along with a display of local & Cretan portable icons (Hagiographies), wooden sculpture, metal art works and embroidery.

Oia
Locals claim that Oia, or Pano Meria as it was once called, is a jewel. It is a labyrinthine settlement balanced on the northern tip of the island which attracts thousands of people. Oia is famous as the best location - Kastro - to look at the most wonderful sunset. As vehicles are not allowed inside the village, walking around its narrow streets is the only way to get to know this gem.. The main pedestrian marble street is full of handicraft and souvenir shops, expensive jewelery boutiques, restaurants and cafes. Oia also hosts a cultural centre and Greek art galleries. The most characteristic image of the Oia printed in most photographs and postcards is the bright white and blue cupola of Agios Georgios church contrasting with the deep blue of theAegean Seain the background.

Historical Sites
If ancient history and museums are your thing, you’ve come to the right place. Archaeology buffs will want to visit the site of ancient Thira, an antique Dorian city with many relics including 9th-century BC tombs, Hellenistic houses, and traces of Byzantine fortifications and churches. The Museum of Prehistoric   Thera  in the island’s main town of Fira houses pots and frescoes from the famed excavations at Akrotiri. Some fresco fragments depict the swallow, the island’s design motif, and a species who still migrates to the island to this day! Akrotiri is an ancient town that was buried when the volcano erupted 3500 years ago. Archaeologists are still excavating it, but you can walk around in the little street quarters and see the buildings almost like they were back then.

Cruise the Caldera
This is a slightly different way to visit the Caldera (volcano cauldron) and enjoy the stunning sunsets of Oia. Several full-day cruises depart from Fira around mid-morning, sailing and docking at ports all around the island. The ships visit Nea Kameni, the active volcano in the centre of the caldera – you’ll probably get an opportunity to climb the volcano. Time for shopping, swimming and lunch round out the day, A stop in Oia to enjoy the sunset is a true cruise highlight.
