THINGS TO SEE & DO
The largest of the Bay Islands of Honduras, Roatan is an irresistible blend of spectacular pristine beaches, breathtaking natural beauty and truly friendly people. Situated 40 miles off the northern Honduran coastline, Roatan is blessed with the world’s second largest barrier reef – second in the world only to Australia’s Great Barrier Reef – making it one of the world’s top diving destinations. For land-lovers, a new Pete Dye golf course, The Black Pearl, is located just a 20-minute boat ride from Palmetto Bay Plantation. Tourist activities in Roatán include diving, eco-tourism, adventure sports like zip-lining, sport fishing, and glass-bottom boat tours.
Honduras is a fascinating country brimming with vast expanses of lush jungles, unspoiled beaches, rugged mountains, rushing rivers and ancient ruins, and bordered by Guatemala, El Salvador and Nicaragua. The capital and largest city is Tegucigalpa, founded by Spanish settlers in 1578. Honduras’ northern portions are part of the Western Caribbean Zone, a historic zone formed in the late sixteenth century that encompasses the Islands of Honduras including Roatan. Honduras is a boon for eco-travelers and features the region’s most extensive tracts of cloud forest as well as the largest remaining area of primary forest. Its biodiversity is incredible, with over 700 species of birds and rare mammals including ocelots, giant anteaters, tapir and mantled howler monkeys. Western Honduras is home to the Ruins of Copan, considered one of the most spectacular cities of ancient Mayan civilization. The elaborate stonework and elegant artistry of Copan’s sculptures are considered without equal in the Mayan world.
Roatan scuba diving offers world-class dive sites for both the novice and advanced diver. Located just off the coast of Honduras and south of Belize, Roatan sits amidst the world’s second largest barrier reef – only Australia’s Great Barrier Reef is larger. The reef’s thousand-foot walls, coral gardens and rich underwater life have made it a mecca for divers from around the globe. There are over 132 dive sites and snorkeling spots around the island! Scuba diving packages, single dives, PADI courses and snorkeling trips can be booked ahead of time or scheduled on-site at the hotel's own dive shop.
Arch’s Iguana Farm
Here’s something different… Plan a visit to Arch’s Iguana Farm, where you can get “up close and personal” with numerous species – over 4,000 iguanas roam freely in this protected haven, where some have grown to over 4 feet long! Early afternoon is “feeding time at the zoo” – and probably the best time of day to pay a visit. If iguanas and the like are your thing…. Other creatures living on site include monkeys, rescued sea turtles and tarpon fish.
Gumbalimba Nature Park
Located in the West Bay, Gumbalimba Nature Park features over 20 acres of beachfront fun. You’ll find a lovely sandy beach with lounge chairs and hammocks along with a watersports concession, swimming pool and kids pool. Highlights include an animal preserve with jump-on-you-shoulders monkeys, free flying exotic birds and other native animals. The botanical gardens features over 200 colorful plants and tree species plus numerous water falls and fountains and a fishing pond with a picturesque hanging bridge!
