ABOUT THE ASCLEPIOS WELLNESS & HEALING RETREAT
Located in central Costa Rica near the town of Alajuela, the Ascleopios is a unique retreat geared to serious health and wellness aficionados. The name “Asclepios” honors the Greek god of health, and the resort truly lives up to the name with its wonderful facilities. The retreat itself is built with only sustainable materials, uses thermal solar collectors, and takes advantage of natural ventilation and the natural lighting of its surroundings. There are 12 simply but beautifully furnished guest rooms. The on-site organic restaurant serves both vegetarian and non-vegetarian fare, made with the freshest of ingredients harvested from home-grown gardens. Health and wellness facilities include a regulated ionized swimming pool, fitness center, yoga and meditation pavilion, sauna, Hammam (Turkish bath), Vichy and Scottish showers, 4 treatment lodges, and a relaxation room. The resort “team” consists of highly skilled spa therapists and selected holistic practitioners from all over the world. There’s a full menu of spa and wellness treatments offered – make sure that, as a TripAlertz guest, you take advantage of the classes, massages and sessions which are included with your amazing TripAlertz getaway. Make sure you also get “off campus” to enjoy the many natural sights and attractions Costa Rica has to offer. There is limited internet access in public areas. The San Jose International Airport is about 20 minutes away.
Guest rooms are individually designed and named for Greek gods and goddesses. As you’d expect, they’re open and airy with white-washed walls and cooling brick floors – a natural simplicity in keeping with the tropical surroundings. Air conditioning is not necessary due to ideal year-round temperatures.
Guest rooms feature:
- Twins and/or queen beds with luxury linens
- Floor-to-ceiling windows
- Marble bathroom, shower or tub, with bathrobes and luxury bath amenities
- Balcony or terrace
- Ceiling fan

OFF-RESORT-BASED ACTIVITIES (At Additional Charge)
There is a wealth of excursions you can take to get to know the “real” Costa Rica… if you want to.
Alajuela is Costa Rica’s second largest city and located just a few minutes from the Asclepios Restreat. And while it’s only a few minutes from San Jose International Airport and maybe a 30-minute cab ride from the hustle and bustle of San Jose itself, it truly is a world apart with its beautiful and picturesque countryside. Parque Central is lovely, filled with massive royal palm trees and with a beautiful fountain imported from Glasgow. The Alajuela Cathedral has a striking red metal dome and an ornate cupola above the altar. There are also a variety of unassuming restaurants if you’re craving to taste the local Costa Rica cuisine.
Poas Volcano National Park
There aren’t too many places in the world where you can almost touch the rim of an active volcano, but this is one of them! A visit to the Poas Volcano National Park gives you the chance. The park is filled with an amazing aquamarine lagoon blanked with ferns and ringed with hiking trails to panoramic lookouts and picnic areas. Bird watchers will rejoice as the Park is also home to many species including the famous quetzal, toucans and himmingbirds.
Located just a short distance from the Asclepious Retreat, the Butterfly Farm presents a fascinating look into the history, mythology and symbolism of these beautiful creatures. There’s a 2-hour tour which includes a visit to an enclosed tropical Butterfly Garden where over a thousand butterflies are flying, mating and laying eggs, feeding and the like – it would be best to plan to visit in the morning when the sun in the strongest and the butterflies most active.
Zoo Ave is the best in Costa Rica, and boasts a collection of large cages holding tourcans, hawks and parrots, along with crocodiles, a boa constrictor, turtles, monkeys, wildcats and all sorts of other “residents”. Unique to this attraction is a breeding project for rare and endangered birds, all of which are targeted for eventual release back into the wild.
For a bird’s eye view of the jungle below, consider taking a tour through the (tree) canopy of the tropical rainforest. You’ll hang like a monkey, but that’s ok. You’ll hopefully be seeing a real one or two.. just remember to keep you eyes open as you glide along on this unforgettable adventure activity!
Goodness Gracious, Great Balls of Fire
If you have the chance, make sure you take a tour to the Northern Volcano Zone. The “Parque Nacional Volcano Arenal” is named for its main attraction, the Arenal Volcano which, with its cloud-covered crater, is as dramatic from a far as it is up close and personal. You can take a guided hike through one of the most complex eco-systems on earth on extravagant trails brimming with hot springs and pristine lakes.
