Your Villa Blanca getaway includes admission to the following area sights!

Villa Blanca Biological Reserve Research Station
Located on the hotel grounds, this active field research laboratory is open to researchers, students, nature guides and hotel employees, as well as provides a very unique attraction for hotel guests from around the world – Villa Blanca is one of the few hotels where such a program exists!  The work done at the Villa Blanca Research Station is part of an international database on biodiversity shared with scientists and researchers around the world. The variety and collection of species represent an inventory – in the surrounding Los Angeles Cloud Forest Biological Reserve – similar to Monteverde’s cloud forest, yet it is far more accessible for scientists, institutions and visitors from the nearby capital of San Jose as well as many other parts of the world.

Nature and Hiking Trails
A combination of well-maintained trails offer Villa Blanca guests the option of self-guided excursions as well as guided tours with nature guides who rank amongst the country’s most experienced and knowledgeable professionals in Costa Rican cloud forest flora and fauna. There is no Costa Rica adventure that equals the awe inspiring connection to the magic of nature you’ll experience when exploring the diversity and intensity of life in the Los Angeles Cloud Forest Reserve with its beautifully contoured trails which wind their way through this most unique and spectacular jungle ecosystem.

There is a wealth of excursions you can take to get to know the “real” Costa Rica… if you want to.

Alajuela is Costa Rica’s second largest city and located just a few minutes from the Villa Blanca. And while it’s only a few minutes from San Jose International Airport and maybe a 30-minute cab ride from the hustle and bustle of San Jose itself, it truly is a world apart with its beautiful and picturesque countryside. Parque Central is lovely, filled with massive royal palm trees and with a beautiful fountain imported from Glasgow. The Alajuela Cathedral has a striking red metal dome and an ornate cupola above the altar. There are also a variety of unassuming restaurants if you’re craving to taste the local Costa Rica cuisine.

Parque Nacional Juan Castro Blanco
One of the lesser explored parks in Costa Rica, Juan Castro Blanco National Park (Parque Nacional Juan Castro Blanco), is located approximately 12 miles from the Villa Blanca, northwest of the Central Valley, with the Poas Volcano to the southeast and Braulio Carrillo National Park to the east. Juan Castro Blanco National Park provides an excellent opportunity to see incredible primary and rain forests, which make up 50% of the park. Stretching out over 35,000 acres, there is an extensive, yet rugged trail system that allows visitors to explore the vast array of flora and fauna. Birders commonly view the black turkey, peacock, falcon and even the quetzal. Mammals found here include monkeys, coyotes, armadillos, raccoons, goats and various felines. Many different reptiles and amphibians are found inside the park including species of frogs, lizards and snakes. Dense vegetation gives way to forests full of quizarra, oak, cypres and cedar. Orchids are also found throughout the park. Archeological discoveries have even shown that the park was the meeting ground for ancient cultures!

Poas Volcano National Park
There aren’t too many places in the world where you can almost touch the rim of an active volcano, but this is one of them!  A visit to the Poas Volcano National Park gives you the chance. The park is filled with an amazing aquamarine lagoon blanked with ferns and ringed with hiking trails to panoramic lookouts and picnic areas. Bird watchers will rejoice as the Park is also home to many species including the famous quetzal, toucans and hummingbirds.

Zoo Ave
Zoo Ave is the best in Costa Rica, and boasts a collection of large cages holding tourcans, hawks and parrots, along with crocodiles, a boa constrictor, turtles, monkeys, wildcats and all sorts of other “residents”. Unique to this attraction is a breeding project for rare and endangered birds, all of which are targeted for eventual release back into the wild.

For a bird’s eye view of the jungle below, consider taking a tour through the (tree) canopy of the tropical rainforest. You’ll hang like a monkey, but that’s ok. You’ll hopefully be seeing a real one or two.. just remember to keep you eyes open as you glide along on this unforgettable adventure activity!

Goodness Gracious, Great Balls of Fire
If you have the chance, make sure you take a tour to the Northern Volcano Zone. The “Parque Nacional Volcano Arenal” is named for its main attraction, the Arenal Volcano which, with its cloud-covered crater, is as dramatic from a far as it is up close and personal. You can take a guided hike through one of the most complex eco-systems on earth on extravagant trails brimming with hot springs and pristine lakes.
