THINGS TO SEE & DO
When you take a look at some of the things you can do Honolulu, you may just want to consider extending your getaway beyond the initial 3 nights. Stay for a total of up to 6 nights at the special TripAlertz rate – you won’t find a better deal than this!
When you see a picture captioned “Honolulu”, it could be of the sprawling downtown high-rises along the palm-fringed beach. But more likely, it will be a shot of Diamond Head. Many think it’s a mountain, but it isn’t. It’s an over 150,000-year old crater which looms over Waikiki Beach. In Hawaiian, it’s known as “Le’ahi”, meaning the brow of the yellow-fin tuna (you’re familiar with “ahi” if you love seafood and/or sushi!). A fun activity is to actually climb the crater to the top for a magnificent panoramic view over Honolulu and Waikiki Beach. It’s not a hard climb – there are handrails along the whole 1.4 mile roundtrip hike, and tons benches along the way to sit, take a break and enjoy the scenery!
Think Honolulu, think Pearl Harbor. If you only had time to do one thing while on the island of Oahu, a visit to Pearl Harbor should most certainly be it. A visit to the USS Arizona Memorial is a solemn and sobering experience. A stop at the visitor’s center is followed by a ferry boat ride which takes you out to the memorial itself where you will see the decks of the USS Arizona just below the water’s surface – the final resting place of the 1,177 crew members who lost their lives on December 7, 1941. You’ll also be able to climb aboard the submarine USS Bowfin and hit the decks of “Mighty Mo”, the USS Missouri, which was the ship on which the formal Japanese surrender was signed, bringing about the end of WWII in the Pacific.
You’ve got to go to a luau when you’re on Oahu. A luau, if you’re not familiar with the term, is a traditional Hawaiian feast, featuring amazing food – some of which you’ve probably heard of like poi (mashed taro plant), kalua pig (the whole hog cooked underground), lomi salmon (a fresh tomato and salmon salad) and beer (no qualifier necessary) – and some of which you haven’t– like poke (raw fish salad), opihi (sea snails) and haupia (a coconut milk-based dessert). Besides the food, there’s entertainment in the form of the hula (dance) and traditional Hawaiian music. Some luau’s are also highlighted with Hawaiian fun and games along with traditional (flower wreath) lei-making.
Take a break from the beach and put on your walking shoes to view some of the monuments to Honolulu’s past. Start out at the Aloha Tower, the lighthouse which was considered to be one of Hawaii’s first landmarks. Continue on to the statue to King Kamehameha I, the Kawaiaho’o Church, the first Christian church in Hawaii, the Old Federal Building and the Missions House Museum. Also make sure to visit the Iolani Palace, the only one ever located on U.S. soil – it was home to Hawaii’s last monarchs.
This is more like a way to get around than an “attraction” in itself. The Waikiki Trolley is a hop-on, hop –off open-air trolley car with 3 routes / lines to get you where ever you want to go in Honolulu. The Red Line covers Honolulu’s historic sights with key stops like the Aloha Tower, Chinatown and Iolani Palace. The Green Line takes you to the best scenic attractions such as Diamond Head, Waikiki Aquarium and the Honolulu Zoo. The Pink Line is great if you’re looking for the best in shopping and dining, with stops at the multi-million square-foot Ala Moana Shopping Mall, the Waikiki Beach Walk and the Royal Hawaiian Center.
