THINGS TO SEE & DO
There’s so much to do on Antigua. Here’s just a taste of some of the highlights:
For an un-beach-y view of a Caribbean shoreline, make sure to visit Devil’s Bridge on Antigua’s northeastern coast at Indian town. Now a national park, the natural rock / limestone arch formations have been carved by countless centuries of relentless crashing breakers of the Atlantic Ocean. And why the name “Devil’s Bridge”, you ask? Apparently, it was the site where slaves, out of desperation, chose to end their lives by throwing themselves off the bridge into the un-survivable surf below.
The charming town of Falmouth was one of the original British settlements on the island’s south coast, and is just a few minutes walk from Nelson’s Dockyard and English Harbor. Surrounded by old sugar plantations and mills, Falmouth boasts an active waterfront which hosts many world-class yachts which make their way into the harbor. You’ll also find Windward Beach, one of the island’s most lovely, in this area.
Nelson’s Dockyard at English Harbor
Take a tour to visit Nelson’s Dockyard National Park at English Harbour, Antigua’s most famous attraction. You don’t have to be a history buff to delight in a realistic view of English maritime life in the 18th century. Now completely restored, this is the only Georgian Dockyard in the world. And if you get the chance, make sure to travel up to Shirley Heights for amazing panoramic and far-reaching views of Nelson’s Dockyard and English Harbour below.
Shopping in St. John’s: Public Market + More
It would be worth your while to make a trip to the island’s capital. You can experience a true taste of local Caribbean life at the Public Market, where on Fridays and Saturdays, locals jam the area to buy and sell (haggle and yell) the freshest of fruits, vegetables, fish and spices – this is old-time Caribbean shopping at its best. If haggling while shopping isn’t your thing, you do have some choices. Heritage Quay is a shopping mall located where the cruise ships dock, where you’ll find shops that sell a good selection of both duty free goods and local crafts. Redcliffe Quay is a charming waterfront marketplace with its cotton-candy colored buildings that house shops, restaurants and boutiques connected by courtyards and lovely landscaped walkways.
Take a Hike
Nearby Boggy Peak (also known as Mount Obama) provides a one-hour climb taking you to the top of the highest point on Antigua, from which you can spot the neighboring islands of Montserrat and St. Kitts – it’s great to get moving and your efforts will be rewarded with a spectacular view!
Antigua Rainforest and Canopy Tour – Zip Along Like Tarzan or Jane
Take a canopy tour for a different change of pace – it’s only a few minutes from the Keyonna Beach. There are a series of zip lines, some in excess of 200 and 300-feet long, crisscrossing the gorge varying from 200 - 350 feet high. The tour also comprises short trails and suspension bridges, which are completed with a unique, absolutely safe, 'Leap of Faith', a controlled 36 -foot vertical descent to descend in a fun way – don’t be shy to scream your heart out – everyone else does too!
