THINGS TO SEE AND DO

Great Pagosa Hot Springs
Long touted as the largest and hottest natural mineral outflow in the world, the "Great Pagosah Hot Spring" is often coveted for its healing and restorative qualities. The Ute Indians were one of the native tribes who claimed ownership of the Great Pagosa Hot Springs – whose meaning can be loosely translated to mean “boiling water” or “healing water”. Pagosa Country travelers can choose between three downtown bathing facilities that offer either indoor or outdoor pools, or both – so you can “take a soak” any time of year!

Neighborhood Skiing
Think Colorado Rockies in the winter, think snow and skiing! Experience various activities while staying at this wonderful retreat like the Wolf Creek Ski Area, with the most snow in Colorado! Twenty-two runs from beginner to expert, with equipment rentals available, make it perfect for a whole family of ski bunnies, Purgatory Ski Area, featuring "The hottest skiing in the West," is known for its sunshine, dry powder and abundant snowfall.

 Indian Ruins:  Mesa Verde
Spanish for "green table", this site offers a spectacular look into the lives of the Ancestral Pueblo people who made it their home for over 700 years, from A.D. 600 to 1300. Today the park protects nearly 5,000 known archeological sites, including 600 cliff dwellings. These sites are some of the most notable and best preserved in the United States.

Chimney Rock Archeological Area
The Chimney Rock's vertical pillars rising from the top of a hill are located in the San Juan National Forest west of Pagosa Springs. Once home to hundreds of early American Indians, the archeological finds in the vicinity include 200 homes and other structures which have been discovered near ancient farming areas. This collection of sites made up the cultural center of an ancient American Indian civilization. Many of these sites have been reburied for their protection and preservation. Four sites — Great Kiva, Pit House, Ridge House and Great House Pueblo — have been excavated and stabilized to provide visitors a glimpse into the past. Chimney Rock has its own significance – every 18.6 years the moon rises perfectly between the rocks. The Chimney Rock Archeological Area became officially became the Chimney Rock National Monument in September 2012.

Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad
Calling all railroad buffs and anyone looking for an unforgettable adventure! This historic train has been in continuous operation for 130 years, carrying passengers behind vintage steam locomotives and rolling stock indigenous to the line. Relive the sights and sounds of yesteryear for a spectacular journey on board the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. Durango was founded by the Denver & Rio Grande Railway in 1879. The railroad arrived in Durango on August 5, 1881 and construction on the line to Silverton began in the fall of the same year. By July of 1882, the tracks to Silverton were completed, and the train began hauling both freight and passengers. The line was constructed to haul silver & gold ore from the San Juan Mountains, but passengers soon realized it was the view that was truly precious. The trip takes about 3.5 hours each way. Make sure to visit the fascinating museums at either end of your journey!
