THINGS TO SEE & DO

There’s so much to do on St. Lucia. Here’s just a taste of some of the highlights:

The Pitons
Seemingly rising from the deep blue Caribbean Sea just south of Soufrière Bay, these two unusual mountains are a symbol of St. Lucia and also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Named “Gros Piton” and “Petit Piton”, these iconic towering peaks are located near the city of Soufriere on the Southwestern coast of the island. The Pitons are technically known as “plugs, formed from lava spewing from volcanic eruptions more than 30 million years ago. While it’s possible to climb them, they truly are best enjoyed from afar. TIP: The Island’s local beer is named after these two mountains – it’s probably the best way to enjoy “Les Pitons”.. while sipping one too!

St. Lucia Jazz Festival
Saint Lucia Jazz has become one of the most anticipated events on the international music festival circuit. St Lucia is a legendary party host, flexible, always catering to the needs of its visitors. What started long ago with a performance of one celebrity musician to welcome visitors is now catering to thousands from all walks of life who need to be free of cultural barriers. The result is a party lasting many days. Jazz is center stage but there is a fusion of R&B, Soul, Pop, Musica Latina, Reggae, Soca, Zouk and other music truly rivaling the Billboard Charts, attracting patrons from around the globe. Past performers include Kenny G, Air Supply, John Legend, Rihanna, Santana and many more. This year’s festival is scheduled from April 30 to May 13, 2012.

Castries
St. Lucia has been a part of the British Commonwealth since 1803. But prior to that, it was often occupied by the French, which is evident in much of the island's culture. Castries offers a colorful local market and great shopping. And the surrounding areas offer lush rain forests, striking waterfalls, beautiful beaches and Sulfur Springs - the world's only drive-through volcano. It’s a great place for duty-free shopping – you’ll find the best near the bustling harbor / port area. There’s also an outdoor market featuring a wide array of straw goods, along with local handicrafts, fabrics and fashions. Castries also has a few landmarks for sightseeing and history buffs including the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Government House and Fort Charlotte.

The Bays of St. Lucia
There are two renowned “Bays” in this beautiful island nation. Marigot Bay was named “the most beautiful bay in Caribbean” by the author James Michener. It’s an historic landmark, having been the site of a number of battles between the French and British navies. It’s absolutely magical, and surrounded on three sides by steep green hills leading to the water – it’s one of the prettiest natural harbors in all of the Caribbean. Rodney Bay is on the island’s northwestern coast, and is the place where you can climb aboard the brig ship Unicorn, used in the Pirates of the Caribbean movie!
