THINGS TO SEE AND DO IN THE PHOENIX AREA
Phoenix is Arizona's capital and largest city, as well as the sixth most populous n the USA, and the largest city in the “Arizona Sun Corridor”, averaging about 85% of possible sunshine in the hot summers and warm winters. It’s an area rife with culture and activities, wonderful dining, shopping and area attractions. Some of the citys’ more popular sights are the Heard Museum with its more than 32,000 pieces of cultural and fine art including a wonderful collection of Kachina Dolls which belonged to the late Senator Barry Goldwater. For nature lovers, the Boyce Thompson Arboretum brings together plants from the earth's many and varied deserts and dry lands. Go to nearby Squaw Peak or Camelback Mountain with great trails for hiker and walkers of all abilities. And for a real taste of the Wild West, bring out your inner cowboy/cowgirl with a visit to the Rawhide Western Town located in Chandler, AZ – about 30 minutes from Phoenix – with its good old Wild West gunfights, stunt shows, stagecoach rides, desert train rides, gold panning and so much more! Best of all, there’s also a well known steakhouse there where you can chow down on some great southwestern cuisine!
Scottsdale…Arts Walk and Shopping
Scottsdale is known for many things – and some of the top activities are art gallery hopping and fabulous shopping! The Downtown is home to nine “walk-able” neighborhoods filled with boutiques, art galleries, restaurants, nightclubs and attractions. There’s even a free downtown trolley, so you can park once and explore all day long. There are more than 100 art galleries in Scottsdale – and a great way to visit some of them is by joining a Scottsdale Arts Walk. Held every Thursday evening, Scottsdale Gallery Association members host special exhibits - many with artist receptions - for an informal come-and-go “open house” throughout the district. For shopping, the area’s top mall is Scottsdale Fashion Square. In a city that's not known for haute couture, you'll be able to satisfy that urge here. When the rich and famous, locals and visitors, need an upscale mall, this is where they go! You can also browse hundreds of boutiques at the Scottsdale Waterfront, Southbridge, Fifth Avenue Shops & Boutiques and Old Town – trust us when we say that downtown Scottsdale is a shopaholic’s dream-come-true!
Desert Botanical Garden
The Desert Botanical Garden has one of the world’s finest collections of desert plants. It is one of only 44 botanical gardens accredited by the American Association of Museums. At the Desert Botanical Garden you will find 50 acres of beautiful outdoor exhibits. Home to 139 rare, threatened and endangered plant species from around the world, there is no finer place to enjoy desert beauty than the Desert Botanical Garden. The Garden is located in Papago Park in Central Phoenix.
Even though the Phoenix Zoo is one of the younger zoos in the country, it has been voted one of the top 5 zoos for kids of all ages! There are a host of “meet the animals” areas including the Giraffe Encounter, Monkey Village and Stingray Bay, just to name a few. Other attractions include a Safari Train, Endangered Species Carousel and pedal boat rentals. Not only is it a successful zoo, but it is a privately owned, nonprofit zoo. That means that it operates strictly without any government funding. The Phoenix Zoo is totally supported by donors and private organizations. Recognizing the important role that zoos must play, the Phoenix Zoo has been very active in wildlife conservation programs.
If you happen to be in Phoenix during baseball season, try to score yourself some tickets to see the Arizona Diamondbacks in their wonderful home ballpark! Chase Field was the first baseball facility in the world to combine a retractable roof, air conditioning, and a natural turf field. If you are a baseball fan, a visit to this state-of-art facility will be a special treat. If you aren't that interested in going to a game, or one isn't scheduled for the time you'll be in town, you can still see it - just go to lunch or dinner at Friday's Front Row Sports Grill, located in the left-field corner of the Ballpark. Friday's Front Row is open 363 days a year.
