THINGS TO SEE & DO
Fort Myers / Fort Myers Beach
Fort Myers is popular for its beaches, fishing, golfing and shopping. Some of the most beautiful beaches and resort hotels in the world are within a few miles of downtown Fort Myers. There's always something to do in the area –with many attractions and activities for all ages – golfing, nature walks, a hands-on museum, a water park, planetarium, and so much more! Fort Myers Beach is the “perfect Florida Beach Town” – combining family vacations with fun and nightlife. The Town Square near the pier is a great people-watching spot –head down the road a bit for a quieter beach experience. There are many beach access points along Estero Boulevard to make your way onto the pristine white sands.
Sanibel and Captiva Islands
Explore Sanibel and Captiva islands – favorites of both locals and visitors alike! These beautiful barrier islands have balanced growth with concern for nature and wildlife and are world famous for "shelling", fishing and the J.N. "Ding" Darling Wildlife Preserve. Sanibel is known as one of the world’s best places to go shelling – where you’ll find tons of freshly-deposited shells when the tide goes out on a regular basis. Away from the water, you’ll drive a narrow island road which is bordered by nature reserves – great for bird-watching. Along the way there are many small shopping complexes, restaurants and cafes and a host of accommodations ranging from full-service resorts to simple motels and guest houses. Captiva is connected to Sanibel via a small bridge, with beaches just as beautiful, along with million-dollar mansions and a selection of small shops, cafes and restaurants. If shelling is your thing, make sure to stop by Sanibel’s Bailey Matthews Shell Museum with its wonderful exhibits! Where-ever you go, one thing’s for sure – the beaches are spectacular!
The Grapefruit League – Baseball’s Spring Training
This year marks the 125th anniversary of “The Grapefruit League” – Spring Training in the state of Florida! The annual tradition has evolved from a time when players got into shape from the off season at fields around the Sunshine State. The Ft. Myers area is the winter home of the Boston Red Sox, now in their new home at the state-of-the-art JetBlue Park – some say it’s a real “mini-Fenway”! The Minnesota Twins are also in Ft. Myers – playing their home games at Hammond Stadium. There’s a wealth of other teams in nearby Bradenton (Pittsbirgh Pirates), Sarasota (Baltimore Orioles), Port Charlotte (Tampa Bay Rays) and up the coast in Tampa/St. Petersburg, where you’ll find the New York Yankees, Detroit Tigers and Toronto Blue Jays getting ready for the season. This is a great chance to see “The Boys of Summer – present and future greats of the sport from around the country in one concentrated area - at low prices and in great weather – it’s a winning combination!
Edison & Ford Winter Estates
Step back in time by visiting Thomas Edison and Henry Ford's winter estates, the nation's 9th most visited historic home. Enjoy 20 acres of historical buildings, historic gardens and more at one of Fort Myers’s most popular attractions! The Edison & Ford Winter Estates give you the opportunity to explore the winter retreats of these two great American inventors: Thomas Alva Edison, of incandescent light bulb, phonograph and stock-ticker fame, and automaker Henry Ford. The newly restored buildings include the Edison Main House, Guest House, and Caretaker’s House and the Ford House. Stroll around the grounds, including the award-winning Moonlight Garden. Make sure to stop by the Edison Ford Museum with its collection of hundreds of inventions, artifacts and special exhibits.
Six Mile Cypress Sloth Prserve
The Six Mile Cypress Slough (pronounced “slew”) is a 2,500-acre wetland which measures 9 miles long and only 1/3-mile wide. It’s a linear ecosystem which is home to a diverse population of plants and animals, including some to be considered endangered. The Slough also serves as a “corridor for wildlife” by providing a safe route of travel. It’s a natural drainage way, collecting run-off water during periods of heavy rainfall. You’ll find a fully accessible 1.2-mile long boardwalk trail with seating enclaves, shelters and observation decks along the way. Make sure to take a guided walk – several are scheduled throughout the day – or grab a self-guided trail brochure if you want to explore on your own.
