THINGS TO SEE & DO AT MEXICO RESORT DESTINATIONS

RIVIERA MAYA

Puerto Morelos
Puerto Morelos might only be located 20 minutes south of Cancun, but it truly is a world apart from the hustle and bustle of the near-by high-energy resort areas. It’s a charming small fishing village with a laid-back atmosphere, replete with a zocolo (town square) surrounded by small shops and local restaurants along its perimeter. The main beach is lovely and just steps from the town center, and is dotted with restaurants and bars. The waters are beautifully calm in good weather. The snorkeling here is amazing – you can bargain with one of the friendly local fishermen to take you out in a small boat to the reef lying just off-shore for some incredible underwater views!

Akumal
Discover charming of Akumal, nestled on the shores of the Mexican Caribbean and 45 minutes south of Playa del Carmen. This small beachside community has long been a secret getaway known only to those who loved exploring the seaside jungle areas of theYucatanCoast. This hidden gem has 3 beautiful bays, making it a haven for divers and snorkel enthusiasts. Enjoy the white sandy beach on the mainAkumalBay, dotted with restaurants, dive shops and fun and funky beach bars.

Mayan Ruins
A getaway to the Riviera Maya would not be complete without a visit to one (or some) of the area’s world-famous ruins to learn about some of the Mayan’s mysterious past. The most famous are the seaside ruins of Tulum to the south… and Chichen Itza, the “grand-daddy of them all” located in the heart of the Yucatan Peninsula. And the ruins at Coba feature the tallest pyramid to be found on theYucatanPeninsula.

PUERTO VALLARTA

Viva Vallarta!
To put it mildly, Puerto Vallartais charming...a Mexican Colonial city with cobble-stoned streets and lovely quaint buildings framed by the ocean in the foreground and towering mountains with lush jungles in the background. The Malecon is a mile-long walkway along the waterfront – it’s always bustling with people walking about, vendors selling their wares and all sorts of character and street entertainers making sure that everyone’s having a good time. It’s also the best place to catch a beautiful Mexican sunset. Open-air cafés, restaurants, bars, chic boutiques and modern art galleries line the streets in and around the waterfront, where strolling around is a treat both day and night.

La Tobara
This is a must-see, must-do for nature lovers! La Tobara is an incredible nature preserve located about three hours north of the Nuevo Vallarta area. A boat takes you on an amazing 10-mile journey through a mangrove-lined eco-system with its dazzling array of wildlife such as exotic birds, tropical fish, giant turtles sunning themselves on tree logs, exotic orchids and sunning crocodiles who actually look like fallen tree logs!

Playa Mismaloya
Calling all movie buffs – come to Mismaloya, the cove where the Night of the Iguana was filmed! Once a pristine bay, it’s serene, Shangri-la-like appeal has been compromised by large hotel developments to the north and south of the bay, but it’s still beautiful, none-the-less! You can kick back in a wooden beach chair to enjoy the day, enjoy the view, and enjoy the sunshine. You can rent some watersports equipment right on the beach, and fuel yourself at one of the local beachfront seafood restaurants. This is truly a popular spot for tourists and locals alike, and it’s only 8 miles south from the town ofPuerto Vallarta.

 ACAPULCO

Acapulco
Known as the “Jewel of the Pacific”, Acapulco was once the legendary go-to resort area for the Jet-Set and the “beautiful people” from all over. Today its exclusivity has been toned down a notch by the emergence of other magnificent resort areas up and down the Mexican coast, but it’s no less beautiful and no less exciting!  Nestled on the shores of magnificent Acapulco Bay– one of the most famous views in the world – you’ll find a bustling tourist destination and port city. Enjoy stunning beaches, incredible natural surroundings, unlimited water and land sports activities, amazing shopping, fabulous dining and legendary nightlife along “The Costera” (Avenida Costera Miguel Aleman, the main avenue that runs the length of the city) that doesn’t really heat-up until the midnight witching hour. And the Mexican beers and tequilas taste so much better when you’re sipping like a local!

Cliff Divers at La Quebrada
This is a must-see, must-do for everyone visiting Acapulco. The Acapulco cliff divers are legendary… fearless, some might say a little loco – jumping (soaring) from high atop the cliffs at La Quebrada’s Club La Perla restaurant down into the shallow rock-infested waters below. Yes, there are a lot of people watching, and yes it could be considered to be a “tourist trap”, but it’s one you definitely need to see.  Shows are in the afternoon and in the evening.

The “Playas”
Playa is the Mexican translation for “beach” – and there sure are some great ones to choose from in the Acapulco area. Playa Condesa is in the heart of the city, and lined with glittering hotels and great restaurants.  Playa Caleta is located in “Old Acapulco”, more family oriented with snug little bays and clam waters, also dotted with tons of restaurants – a great place to spend a day from the tourist hub. The impressive and sprawling Playa Revolcadero is near the airport and home to the world famous Fairmont Acapulco Princess and Pierre Marques resort hotels – it’s absolutely stunning, but while the waters are too rough for swimming, they’re great for surfing and horseback riding. Pie de la Cuesta, off to the west, features a long expanse of beach dotted with little restaurants, and offers the area’s other spectacular sunset vantage point.

LOS CABOS

Cabo San Lucas
Cabo San Lucas is the “happening town” where party and fun are at the top of everyone’s agenda! Stroll the pedestrian walkway which curves around the picturesque harbor, past countless restaurants, bars and shops on one side, and sport fishing boasts and sleek yachts on the other. It was originally a small fishing village where theSeaofCortezmeets thePacific Ocean, and has grown into one ofMexico’s most popular resort destinations. Make sure to stop by the legendary Cabo Wabo Cantina, one of the town’s most famous night spots, founded by Sammy Hagar of Van Halen-band fame – it’s one of the best places to eat and party in all ofMexico!

San Jose del Cabo
San Jose del Cabo is the “low-key sister, the charming colonial town on the other side of the “Sun Corridor” from party-hearty Cabo San Lucas. Stroll along her pedestrian-only streets, pop in and out of area art galleries, dine in some of the area’s finest restaurants, spend the days under the beautiful sun, or ride a horse on the beach. The town’s main square, or Zocolo, is home to the cathedral – a reminder of San Jose del Cabo’s vivid history as a mission.

Sun Corridor
As the name aptly implies, this is the land which lies between the area’s two towns of Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo. This 20-mile Corridor at Land’s End is defined by the azure blue and turquoise waters of the Sea of Cortés, rugged cliffs, quiet coves teeming with marine life, desert vistas and mountains that all come together with a wash of vibrant colors that are unmistakably Cabo’s. Today, other than the natural flora and fauna, the Corridor’s population consists of luxury hotels and resort properties, as well as a variety of premier, world-class golf courses designed by the legends of the game.

MAZATLAN

Fishing and Deer Island
Mazatlan is Mexico's most popular sport fishing location. Types of fish available to be caught are sailfish, marlin, dorado, wahoo, tuna, shrimp and grouper. You might even be able to have your catch prepared at your local restaurant for dinner. For the novice or practiced fisherman, there are plenty of fishing charters to choose from for an unforgettable expedition! Deer Island is located in the bay of Mazatlan and offers relaxing days in the sun and fun-filled adventures. Head to Deer Island for kayaking, reef snorkeling, hiking, swimming, banana boat ride, and volleyball.

Walking Tour of Old Mazatlan
If you like history and walking, get yourself over to Old Mazatlan. Highlights include the Central Market, the Cathedral, Plaza Revolution, Plaza Machado, the Angela Peralta theater and the Archeological Museum

Mazatlan Aquarium
Mazatlan Aquarium has been one of the top things to do in Mazatlan for the last 30 years. A noted center for aquatic life, the Mazatlan Aquarium (or Acuario Mazatlan in Spanish) is the largest in Mexico and ranks among the finest in all of Latin America. Divided into a Botanic Garden and Aquarium, the Mazatlan Aquarium is dedicated to preserving and promoting marine ecosystems and marine species.

ROCKY POINT

Rocky Point, Mexico is located on the northern shore of the Seaof Cortez(Gulf of California). The name Rocky Point is an American name for the town of Puerto Peñasco, in the state of Sonora, Mexico. Puerto Penasco is a small fishing village, commonly referred to by American visitors as Rocky Point. This small fishing town has blossomed into a popular modern day vacation destination. It’s a little over 60 miles from the USA border which makes the seaside city a popular drive-to destination by visitors from the USA. Residents of Phoenix, Arizona can drive to Puerto Penasco, Mexico in as little as 3.5 hours. Rocky Point is often called “Arizona’s beach” because it is close in proximity in Arizona and easy to get to rather quickly.

Things to do in Rocky Point
Go the beach, of course – Playa Hermosa is known to be a great beach for families – when the tide goes out, the rocks and rock-rimmed estuaries and tide pools are exposed – providing hours of educational fun! The area is also great for fishing and unsurpassed scuba diving – the Sea of Cortes was called “The World Aquarium” by Jacques Cousteau!  Stop off at Bird Island, habitat to sea lions and birds, and another great spot for snorkeling, fishing and kayaking.
