THINGS TO SEE & DO

Florence is considered to be the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance and the driving force behind the Age of Discovery. The historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site today. While your TripAlertz getaway requires a minimum 2-night stay, we sure, with the wealth of her many sights and attractions, your visit to Florence will – and should – surely be longer!

Piazza della Signoria
This is probably Florence’s most famous square, located in the heart of the city center, and a free open-air sculpture exhibit – it will probably be one of your first stops! The Loggia della Signoria holds some important statues including a copy of Michelangelo’s David (the original is in the Galleria dell’Academia). The Piazza has been Florence’s political center since the Middle Ages. The Palazzo Vecchio – Florence’s town hall – sits on the piazza, and contains elaborately decorated public rooms and private apartments which are worth a visit. Enjoy people watching while savoring an espresso, gelato or meal in any of the cafes and restaurants surrounding the Piazza.

Must-See Museums
Imagine the very best of Italian paintings all in one place – welcome to the Uffizi Gallery. Courtesy of the last of the Medicis, this gallery boasts a unique problem, literally having too many masterpieces to show! Works are displayed in chronological order and highlights include works by Botticelli, Titian and Chagall. An insider tip – buy your tickets in advance! The Pitti Palace is the largest museum in Florence, and also boasts the beautiful 16th century Boboli Gardens filled with sculpture by artists such as Michelangelo. Make sure to visit the 14 rooms of the Royal Apartments (the Medici idea of a guesthouse) and more than 500 Renaissance artworks in the Palatine Gallery. And last, but not least, is the Galleria dell’Academia, famous for Michelangelo’s David, commissioned by the Florentine republic to symbolize its creation as the first Academy of Fine Arts in Europe.

Piazza del Duomo
The Piazza del Duomo houses the Duomo, the Campanile (Bell Tower) and the Baptistery. The Duomo (Cattedrale de Santa Maria del Fiore) is Florence’s most popular site, with this Gothic structure able to hold over 20,000 people. Its exterior, made of green, pink, and white marble, has several elaborate doors and interesting statues; inside, Brunelleschi's Dome is a masterpiece of construction. Make sure to buy a ticket to climb the 463 steps to the top for an amazing view. For another amazing area view, climb the 414 stairs of the Campanile (bell tower), with its first story designed by Giotto. The Baptistery of John the Baptist, from the 11th century, is one of Florence's oldest buildings. It has three sets of amazing bronze doors (reproductions - the originals are in the Duomo Museum, also worth a visit). Inside, you can see some mosaics and a marble pavement of the zodiac.

Ponte Vecchio
The Ponte Vecchio (old bridge), built in 1345, was Florence's first bridge across the Arno River and is the only surviving bridge from Florence's medieval days (others were destroyed in World War II). The Ponte Vecchio is still lined with shops selling gold and silver jewelry. From the bridge, you'll have a great view along the Arno River and beyond.

Shopping
Florence has some of the finest shopping in Europe. You’ll find leather goods, paper goods, and jewelry, as well as nice souvenirs and art productions. Florence has a number of open air markets selling food, clothing, and antiques. The most famous is around Piazza San Lorenzo where you'll find leather goods, too. Another good place is Mercato Nuovo (Porcellino) on Via Porta Rossa. Mercato Centrale is a great place for food shopping or just looking. And of course the Ponte Vecchio is a great place to browse the many jewelry shops.

Day Trip to Pisa
This is one of the most popular full-day excursions from Florence – a visit to the nearby town of Pisa, famous for its Leaning Tower, beautiful Duomo, and Baptistery in the Piazza dei Miracoli. Pisa also has a good medieval center and a walk along the river. Pisa is easily reached by train or bus from Florence. It's about a 25 to 30 minute walk from the train station to the Piazza dei Miracoli.
