THINGS TO SEE & DO

A good way to get to know Rome is probably on foot as the historic center of the city is less than 2 miles from end to end. Tip: The city boasts an extensive transportation system of busses, trams and a Metro – tourists can purchase a multi-day card to enjoy unlimited transportation privileges; admission to many major attractions is also included on the card!

The Colosseum and Arch of Constantine
Located in the archaeological heart of the city of Rome, the Flavian Amphitheatre, or, more commonly, the Colosseum, is one of Rome’s most visited sites by hoards of visitors attracted by the enchantment of its history and the majesty of its architecture. Immortalized throughout the centuries as a site of games with popular appeal such as gladiatorial contests – remember the movie, The Gladiator – the Colosseum was, and still is, the largest amphitheater in the world. The impressive Arch of Constantine sits just outside of the Colosseum’s main entrance – today it’s known to be one of Rome’s premier photo-op spots by newly-married couples and visitors alike.

Villa Borghese
While the entire city of Rome can be considered to be a museum all by itself, the Villa Borghese is said to house one of the best collections which the city has to offer. The art and artifacts are housed in 20 rooms within a 17th-century villa and feature an amazing array of art and antiquities from the Renaissance through the beginning of baroque era. Admission to the Galleria Borghese is by reservation, so your visit will not be overwhelmed by crowds of fellow travelers. The Villa sits in the BorghesePark, which is to Rome what Central Parkis to New York,Hyde Park is to London and Bois theBoulogneis to Paris– an oasis of greenery in the heart of the city!

Trevi Fountain
Rome is truly a city of fountains – and largest and probably best know is the baroqu e Trevi Fountain. It was built on a site of an original fountain fed by Roman Aqueducts (as most fountains in Rome were) and completed in the mid 1700s by collective collaboration of many artists including Salvi, Bracci, and Pannini. Legend has it that if you toss a coin into the fountain over your left shoulder, you will be assured a return trip to Rome one day. How can you not try that?

Spanish Steps
The Spanish Steps are another one of those classic not-to-be-missed sites! And steps they are – 138 of them rising up the steep slope from the Piazza de Spagna to the church of Trinita dei Monti at the top of the hill. Everyone takes a seat on the Spanish Steps for a picture and the view, and to watch the world go by. It’s also a sight to behold at night, when the area is illuminated in golden light up as are most of Rome’s monuments!

Piazza Navone
The Piazza Navone is probably one of the best known public squares in all of Rome! Impressive monuments including Bernini’s Fountain of the Four Rivers and another by Borromini dominate the square, which is dotted with numerous cafes and shops as well. The Piazza also “starred” with Tom Hanks in the movie “Angels and Demons” as the site of one of the Illuminati markers.

Vatican City
No trip to Romeis complete without a visit to Vatican   City. The pope lives in the papal apartments in the Vatican, St. Peter's Basilica is the Pope’s church, sitting on Saint Peter's Square. Many important art works, including Michelangelo's famous Pieta, are in the church, as are the papal tombs. The Vatican is also home to The Vatican Museums, the largest museum complex in the world. With over 1400 rooms, theVatican Museum includes the museum, galleries with 3,000 years of art, the Sistine Chapel, and parts of the papal palace. There is an astonishing amount of art, including a room of works by Raphael. The Pinacoteca Vaticana is probably Rome's best picture gallery with many Renaissance works.
