THINGS TO SEE & DO

Fort Bennett
This small, picturesque fort is located at the end of a sloping road, and was reported to have been built by the Dutch between 1628 and 1636. Archaeologists suggest that the remnant walls can be found under the undulating surface of the fort, an indication of the constant reconstruction that took place in the wake of the numerous battles fought there. The signature cannons are positioned safely in a recess near the entrance to the grounds, illustrating how the British battery must have originally looked. The turbulent history of the fort stands in stark contrast to the modern day serenity of this spot. A small gazebo sits on the end of the short winding path and offers shelter from the elements and a panoramic view of the bay.

Turtle Beach
Turtle Beach also known as Great Courland Bay is one of the longest beaches on the island stretching from Black Rock to Plymouth. Turtle Beach got its name due to the number of Leather Back turtles which lay eggs there during the nesting season – it’s the third largest nesting area in the world for this endangered species.

Fort King George
Regally overlooking Tobago’s capital from 460ft above the coast, this is the twin islands’ best-preserved historical site. Originally built by the British in 1777, the fort’s perimeter walls were erected by the French in 1781. It changed hands and names several times before the British reclaimed it as Fort King George in 1804. Renowned now for its tranquillity, ocean breeze and panoramic views, the compound includes the Tobago Museum; displays include Amerindian artifacts, colonial relics, military memorabilia and fossils from Tobago’s distant past.

Kimme Museum: “The Castle”
German-born sculptor Luise Kimme has lived and worked in Tobago since 1979 and produces arresting larger-than-life sculptures hewn from solid tree trunks and inspired by local culture, folklore and the beauty of Tobagonian people. As well as working in oak, cedar, lime and cypress she produces bronze casts from the wooden originals. Kimme’s mystical temple of a museum/atelier – known locally as The Castle – features  dancing calypso-nians, towering religious sculptures, Nijinsky ballet dancers and mythological figures.

Main Ridge Forest Reserve
Between Roxborough and Bloody Bay winds the road through the oldest forest reserve in the western hemisphere (14,000 acres were protected in 1776). It’s a beautiful and peaceful drive, but there are also a number of trails (including the popular Gilpin trace, Atlantic, Blue Copper and Nilpin trails) by which to explore the rainforest. Home to abundant flora and fauna, some bird species to look out for include the white-tailed sabre-wing hummingbird, jacamars, and mannequins.

Hike to Argyle Waterfall
A tranquil paradise is waiting for you in Tobago. You haven't experienced the island until you've seen the striking natural beauty of its waterfalls. Take a hike to the Argyle Waterfall, hailed as the most beautiful on the island. Be sure to bring your swimsuit and camera. To reach the falls, accept the guidance of a government guide to take you safely up the slippery path. Go for a swim, snap dramatic photos and soak in the sun for an unforgettable experience.

Scarborough Botanical Gardens
The Scarborough Botanical Gardens cover seventeen acres of tropical soil and are more than a hundred years old by now. Even if you are not a botanist it is still worth a visit, and a nice place to spend a couple of hours!. You will see exotic equatorial plants many of which are not at indigenous to the soils of Tobago. Some of the plants originate in the dense tropical jungles of Africa and South East Asia. For example you can see African Tulip and everlasting immortelle plants. Also take a relaxing walk along silk cotton trees and avenues of royal palms.
